Sadly, former president of South Africa and Nobel Peace Prize Winner died at the age of 95 from a recurring lung infection. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born in Transkei, South Africa on July 18, 1918.Mandela was an iconic man who led the struggle against apartheid in South Africa and also he was the nation's first black leader. Mandela fought for the African people and from white domination and he wanted to live in a "democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities." Before all of this, Mandela was once sentenced to life in prison on the conviction of sabotage and for conspiring against the government and planning to overthrow the government with violence. Eventually, news of Mandela's imprisonment spread and he was soon widely known throughout the world as the most significant leader in South Africa. He was released after serving 27 years in jail because there was too much pressure on the South African government from the anti-apartheid campaigners. Later, Mandela was nominated president in May 1994 and served until 1999. His leadership and work gained international recognition and he has won numerous awards for his efforts such as the Ataturk Peace Award by Turkey and the the Order of Merit from Queen Elizabeth II. Nelson Mandela was a true hero and his legacy will never be forgotten.
