Periods 5 and 6 read George Orwell's Politics and the English Language this week. The essay is an appropriate starting point for our study of government and politics because it focuses on language and writing, specifically how the modern decadence of our language is both a cause and effect of our corrupted thoughts. Political language is especially important because, as Orwell, argues, "(i)n our age there is no such thing as ‘keeping out of politics’. All issues are political issues, and politics itself is a mass of lies, evasions, folly, hatred, and
schizophrenia. When the general atmosphere is bad, language must suffer."
And when language suffers, so does thought.
Orwell tells us that fight against bad English is a noble one and a starting point to some improvement "to our present political chaos." In the pursuit of that cause, students brought to class today examples of slovenliness of language that may be a result of our foolish thoughts and a source of them. We discussed each. Take a look.
