[Nigeria] Water - So Important, So Ignored

In Nigeria, water is a serious issue. There's not enough drinking water in Nigeria for the people to live off of. Sunday, March 22nd was the United Nation's World Water Day and yet again is passed by without any action from Nigeria. Water is obviously a vital resource to human survival. Clean water is necessary if a country wants to move forward. Without the most basic tool for survival a country doesn't stand a chance. With increasing concerns over water resource violence it's becoming increasing important that the Nigerian government come up with a new plan to give access to water for its people.

Water is also an important source of energy for Nigeria. "For Nigeria, focus on energy and water is critical to the attainment of the economic and social prosperity that Nigerians desire," says the author of the anonymous editorial on the Nigerian Vanguard newspaper website. Drawing a parallel to Maslow's hierarchy of needs, how can a society advance if it doesn't have access to one of the most important resources for human development? It can't and it won't. Nigeria has to focus on the basics if it ever wants to escape its history of violence and corruption. Energy and water development not only opens up new jobs and opportunities, but it also provides a basis for the rest of Nigeria to thrive through agricultural boosts.

The current drinking water situation in Nigeria is "too ominous to be ignored." Most drinking water is of questionable safety. The author believes that action needs to be taken immediately, with an increasing budget going towards water and energy. They suggest that Nigeria should turn to the private sector for providing water and energy, although I'm not sure I fully agree with that. With the history of corruption in Nigerian oil's private sector, it may not be such a good choice. The government would be best off fueling this project, with strict regulations and anti-corruption efforts to prevent such a vital project from going bad.

It's a shame that the Nigerian people struggle to get the water that they need, and things aren't going to change much until action is taken by the government. With water being an essential, until this problem is solved (plus a plethora of Nigeria's other problems, but this is definitely one of the roots) development possibilities are bleak.
